    Coimbra - fixed gear?

Mensagem  msawicki em Qui Dez 17, 2009 4:05 pm

    Hello,

First of all sorry for the language, unfortunately i do not speek portuguese (but I've just started learning)

Soon I will move to Coimbra to study on the University (erasmus).

Here in Warsaw (Poland) I ride my fixie but I have heard that Coimbra is hilly, and not only the fixie but even the bike is useless there. Is it true? I did want to take my bike to Coimbra, but now I wonder if it's good idea. Or maybe I should just stick with a road bike, leaving the fixie in Poland (I will miss it like a hell!)

What do You think:) ? Thx for advices.

Hmmm, I guess you can ride fixed in Coimbra - most part of the city anyway - but you should switch your gears to a more relaxed ones, like 40 X 18 or something like that, depends on how strong your legs are.
Plus, the university is up on one of the hills, but the climb is not that steep. And most of the river side parts of the city are straight/plain.

    Hi there,

I'm from Coimbra! Coimbra is not so bad for bike riding, I ride bmx, mtb and now I'm building up a fixed gear bike! If I can ride bmx everywhere, you can easily ride a fixed gear bike! the university area is the hardest part because that "hills" factor but with the right gear you can easily ride there!

http://www.gustafsonresearch.com/photography/coimbra.jpg the university is on top! trust me, it looks harder than it really is!

    welcome

well, as they said, you can ride your bike in coimbra. its a totally bike unfriendly city though. i reckon it'll be a challenge to use a bike as means of transportation!

you should try and ride down 'quebra-costas' with your fixed gear bike, and please don't forget to record it! ahahaha

ps. quebra-costas roughly translated means, back-breaker

    Smile Thanks for Your answers.
I have just noticed this video:
    http://www.dailymotion.pl/video/x9sfr2_coimbra-bike-day-com-som-musical-do_sport

Looks funny, its a pity all the bikers ride MTB but the amount of bikes gave me some hope Smile Maybe i will take my road bike, as I see the gears may be necessary.

Joao, what do You mean calling Coimbra unfriendly city? Is it becouse of the hills or something else (for example Warsaw is not so friendly becouse of the dumb drivers who does not give a shit about bikers)

I do have three questions more.

    1) As I heard and saw (on the meteo graphs) Coimbra is fairly rainy (or very rainy in compare with Warsaw). Baptista isnt it difficult to ride a bike in Coimbra becouse of the constant rain? Excuse me if the question is silly Smile)!

    2) Bike in a train. As i get to Lisbon with a plane i will have to go with a train to Coimbra. Is it common to travel with a bike in train, does it require an extra charge, or maybe its fully banned Smile?

    3) The Ocean Smile As I see Coimbra is only 40 km from the Ocean so i've already made some plans to go there for the first weekend. Does anybody knows the road? Is it fine? Is generally fine in Portugal to ride on a public roads with a bike?

well, unfriendly in the sense that you won't find bike lanes and it as really steep hills with pavé! it might be worth the challenge! I only rode there on my 24" street mtb and never on traffic.

I've taken my bike on the train lots of times with no problems. you'll have to take at least the front wheel out and cover it a bit. I think there is a charge for bikes but i've never paid it using that method. I think you are allowed to carry a bike on the train to the beach on weekends. I'm not sure though..

my gilrfriend studied in coimbra and I spent a lot of time there, I wouldn't consider it a rainy city. it's really cold on winter and boiling hot on summer but not that much rain i think..

    cheers!

it depends on each type of train, for example, that beach you're talking about (by the way, there are a few roads to go there and you can easily ride your bike there! many people go there on their bikes on weekends!) back to the trains, for example there is a skatepark there(in that beach) and to save some money I'll usually go on the train, you don't need to do anything, just put your bike in! obviously you'll need some attention because of other passengers! on other trains, like probably the one you'll have to take when you arrive at the airport, I suppose you have to pay something else... can't be sure.

all correct! I ride my bike almost every day, during the entire year!
